Battery Emulator
This is a 120 kW battery emulator — an advanced test system that can replicate different types of batteries, such as lead-acid and lithium-ion. All parameters are configurable, allowing it to charge and discharge like a real battery.
It is connected to a grid-forming inverter, which converts the battery’s DC power into the AC electricity used on the grid.
It can also be used to test how batteries perform over time through automated charge and discharge cycles.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger
We have a range of AC and DC EV chargers that can be used for experiments.
Some are bi-directional meaning they can both charge a vehicle and send energy from the car’s battery back to a home or the grid. This is known as vehicle-to-home (V2H) or vehicle-to-grid (V2G).

Electricity Supply Switch
This switch lets us toggle between the site’s normal power supply and a grid emulator (a
system that mimics real-world grid conditions).
When using the emulator, the lab is separated from the rest of the site so we can safely test how equipment responds to different scenarios.

Electronic Workbench
This is where we can set up small scale experiments and test electric circuits.
We use high accuracy oscilloscopes, which measure how electricity behaves in these circuits.

Grid Emulators
We have six modular grid emulators - advanced test systems that can replicate different grid conditions, such as faults and voltage disturbances. They create their own independent grid within the lab, separate from the rest of the site.
Each emulator is rated at 45 kW (270 kW in total). They can also operate as loads, simulating the energy use of a residential home or commercial building.

Grid Forming Inverter
This unit is an inverter, which converts electricity from the battery (DC) into grid compatible power (AC).
It is typical of the technology used in large battery installations and microgrids.
A grid forming inverter can help create and stabilise the local electricity supply, supporting the system as we transition from large spinning generators to distributed renewable energy.

Power Meters
Power meters measure and record how electricity is flowing and behaving in the system.
They provide a steady, once per second overview of voltage, current and power flows.
For more detailed analysis, a separate data acquisition system captures very fast (50,000 times per second), high resolution data, allowing us to closely examine how the electrical signals change over time.

Programmable Inverter
This is a fully programmable 22kW inverter that allows CSIRO to test different ways of controlling inverter behaviour.
It can operate in “grid following” mode (responding to the grid) or “grid forming” mode (helping to set and stabilise the grid).

Real Time Simulator
This is a really fast specialised computer that can simulate transmission and distribution systems in real time.
It can be linked to the grid emulator to bring real electrical signals into the REIF. It is the bridge between computer simulation and real lab testing.

Solar PV Emulators
These two cabinets form a 50kW programmable power supply that can mimic how a solar panel system behaves.
It can simulate different conditions, such as sunny or cloudy days, and provides consistent, repeatable inputs for testing inverters.
